World Environment Day

Each year 05th June is celebrated as the World Environment Day. This year’s theme for World Environment Day is “Forests: Nature at Your Service”. The theme for this year represents the value of forests and is chosen after the International Year of Forest 2011.
Maldives celebrated World Environment day with launching of a campaign called “Say NO to plastic bags” yesterday at Artificial Beach. This campaign was officially inaugurated by the Minister of Housing and Environment, Mohamed Aslam. The aim of this campaign is to minimize the usage of plastic bags in the Maldives and protecting our vulnerable marine biodiversity from the harmful effects of plastic bags.
Environmental NGOs of Maldives participated in a fair held to mark this year’s environment day to raise awareness among the public on the bad effects of plastic on the environment. People of different age group enjoyed this fair through the activities, games, display of recycled products and art displayed to raise awareness.
Many NGOs namely, JCI Maldives, TREE Maldives, Hulhumale’ Environment Youth & Development Association (HEYDA), Maldives Volunteers Corporation, Maldivian Youth Climate Network, Scout Association of Maldives, Maldives Girl Guide Association, Artful with Wataniya and Environs participated in celebrating this year’s environment day. .
“Say NO to plastic bags” campaign which was launched will be carried out for three weeks. A ‘Door to Door’ campaign will be held till 14th June focusing the general public. To raise awareness presentations and video spots will be presented at major shopping centers in Male’. The main activity of this campaign will be the ‘No Plastic bag week’ celebrated from 15th June to 20th June. Certificate of participation will be awarded to Individuals and companies who participate in the ‘No Plastic bag campaign’.
